About
Matthew F W Dennis is a photographic artist and curator from Dartmoor, in the South West of England, who graduated from The Nottingham School of Art. His practice is built upon the landscape and stories of Dartmoor, which was the backdrop of his upbringing. After a detour into fashion and portraiture during university, he is now exploring and reconnecting with folklore, ideas of self, the ancient landscape and burial rituals. He has found refuge in the barren lands, that now contain just scars of former settlements, and are only inhabited by the masculine and feminine energy of ley lines that interweave across this enigmatic environment. His work is showing a new way of connecting to these ancient traditions and reverence for British landscapes through a queer lens of sanctuary, belonging and the freedom of oblivion. Along with his own personal relationship with this landscape, he hopes his work will allow others to connect to their own physical or spiritual places of belonging.
His work has been shown at various exhibitions, including at The Royal West of England Academy, Bristol, The Holburne Museum, Bath and OFF Photo Festival, Bratislava. His first solo exhibition, Landscapes of Our Being, opened in April 2024 at Sitheag, Inverawe.
